Cinque Terre, Italy

June 9, 2015

The Cinque Terre is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. It is in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia. “The Five Lands” comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visible corporate development. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside. The Cinque Terre area is a very popular tourist destination.

Growing Clematis

May 14, 2015

If you’re a beginning gardener, then growing clematis is for you.  It is extremely easy to be successful for this climbing “queen” of plants.  There are many types of clematis available including:  Henryi, General Sikorski, Jackmanii and Comtesse de Bouchard.  Many local garden stores and big box stores offer these and many more varieties!

Clematis vines can grow to be 10-12 feet in length, so you will need to take this into consideration when choosing a spot to grow one.  Ideally, you will have a partially sunny spot to grow your  new vine.  Sometimes clematis can take 1-2 years to start blooming, so you will want to buy a plant in a gallon container to make sure you get an established plant.

Clematis vines are happiest when they have something to grow on like a small trellis or arbor.  Because these leaf stems are minimal in size, anything that’s more than about 1/2 inch wide is too wide for the leaf stem grab. The easiest things for a clematis to grab onto, are twine, fishing line, wire, thin branches, wooden dowels or steel rods. The more grabbing opportunities you offer, the better!

The Texas State Capitol Building is by far the largest capitol building in the United States.  For comparison, the Texas State Capitol has 667,700 square feet and the Washington DC Capitol building has 175,170 square feet.  Most of the square footage is below ground in a very cavernous system of offices, but nonetheless it is the largest.   Also, this building is one of the state’s most pristine examples of architecture both inside and outside.  You can tour the capitol building free of charge year round on either a guided tour or just by wandering around on your own if you are tight on time.

Inspirational Stained Glass

January 9, 2015

The Obscure Beginnings of Stained Glass

Many histories of stained glass begin with Pliny’s tale of the accidental discovery of glass by Phoenician sailors. The legend recounts shipwrecked sailors who set their cooking pots on blocks of natron (soda) from their cargo then built a fire under it on the beach. In the morning, the fire’s heat had melted the sand and soda mixture. The resultant mass had cooled and hardened into glass. Today, though, it is thought that Pliny — though energetic in collecting material — was not very scientifically reliable. It is more likely that Egyptian or Mesopotamian potters accidentally discovered glass when firing their vessels. The earliest known manmade glass is in the form of Egyptian beads from between 2750 and 2625 BC. Artisans made these beads by winding a thin string of molten glass around a removable clay core. This glass is opaque and very precious.
