Elegant Lady Hybrid Tea Rose

September 22, 2015

This stunning hybrid tea displays classic beauty and radiance through sublime ivory petals overlaid with a clear pink blush. The full buds swirl into large, 4½- to 5-inch, high-centered blooms, each comprised of 26 to 40 petals and boasting a mild yet pleasing sweet, tea-rose fragrance. They stand out beautifully against the healthy glossy, medium green foliage. These gorgeous blossoms will grace your garden in flushes throughout their early summer to late summer season. This tall, upright, well-branched shrub grows to a mature height of 5 to 5½ feet and a width of around 4 feet.

It’s ideal for the garden or large patio containers (containers will require winter protection). ‘Elegant Lady’ is an exceptionally beautiful and renowned hybrid tea rose! This rose performs best in medium-moisture, slightly acidic, well-drained loam in full sun. Water deeply and regularly, preferably in the morning, and avoid overhead watering. Make sure the plant has good air circulation, as this promotes vigorous and healthy growth and helps prevent disease. It should be pruned in the spring, with the removal of old canes and dead wood. Cut back canes that cross each other. Gardeners in warmer climates will want to cut the remaining canes by one-third, while those in colder climates will probably need to trim it a bit more.

Julia Child Rose

September 12, 2015

The Julia Child rose was bred by the American Tom Carruth in 2004 and is known in the UK as the Absolutely Fabulous rose. It is a golden butter/gold floribunda rose, named after the chef Julia Child. It was introduced into the United States by Weeks Wholesale Rose Grower, Inc. in 2006. This rose has buttery bold blooms and much like Julia Child’s cooking, this rose has a fragrance that delights the senses with its mild licorice scent. This is an excellent flower with buttery golden  yellow 4″ blooms (petals 20+) that is continually blooming.

http://www.adamsnursery.com/gallery/yellow-and-orange-roses/julia-child

The bush grows in height of 26″ to 31″ (65 to 80 cm), with a spread of 20″ to 26″ (50 to 65 cm). It could grow larger in warmer climates. Usually climates with warmer temperatures offer the roses a longer season, thus allowing them to get much larger than they would in a shorter season. The bright green foliage make a nice backdrop for the buttery yellow flowers. It is used in borders, garden beds, containers, and as a cut flower. It is a popular landscaping plant, because of its bright yellow color, disease resistance, and constant bloom.

Bolivian Fuchsia

September 7, 2015

Bolivian Fuchsia is a species of Fuchsia native to southern Peru, Bolivia and northern Argentina. It is a deciduous shrub or small tree with toothed, hairy or hairless leaves, sometimes with red veins and terminal, pendant panicles of pale pink to bright pink flower tubes with pale pink to red sepals and red petals in summer and autumn. The pendant flowers are terminal about 2 inches long with pink to vermillion tubes and reflexed sepals. Fuchsias prefer partial shade and should never dry out. They love water and cooler summer temperatures, making them a favorite for the Pacific Northwest. They are heavy feeders so feed with a a quick release, water soluble fertilizer every other week during the bloom season.

Start planting the bolivian fuchsia start them from transplants around mid-spring. Many gardeners transplant fuchsia around Easter. Normally you would plant 4 to 5 transplants in the average size hanging basket. Planting all of the same variety in one basket makes a much nicer show. Prune back dead or broken branches in spring, especially on plants that were left outside in areas with mild winters. Plants require protection from direct sun and temperatures reaching the mid 90s. The plants are hardy to about 25 for short periods. Propagation is by seed or cuttings. Many consider this one of the most fuchsias. Zones 10 to 11.
