Climbing roses take a little extra attention, but with patience your efforts will be richly rewarded.  Here’s how to get the best out of your climbing rose efforts:

LOCATION:  Most roses prefer loose, well-drained soil and will bloom best if they get at least six hours of full sun per day.

Joseph’s Coat Climbing Rose – find it for sale HERE: https://www.directgardening.com/2326-roses/4750-climbing-joseph-s-coat-rose#/quantity-1

WATER & FOOD:  For the first two years water climbing roses deeply and regularly.  During the first year feed them lightly with a balanced liquid plant food (12-12-12) in late May and again in mid-July.  In year two, feed with ½ cup of a complete granular fertilizer around the base of the plant in late February.

Eden Climbing Rose – find it for sale HERE:  http://www.jacksonandperkins.com/edentrade-climbing-rose/p/30014/?gclid=CIXN2a_q3s0CFQIOaQodYMMGNg&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=ppc_google_pla&gdffi=341ebfce6bce4cc5b5f6be51f712e281&gdfms=71C9249D15F74A4E825843E4C6244E6E&ef_id=V0ODxAAAAC@IgjDI:20160706122417:s

TRAINING & PRUNING:  Rose canes don’t actually “climb” like vines do, so you’ll need to tie the canes to sturdy supports with twine, heavy-gauge plastic ties or plastic-coated wire.  It takes several years to develop strong climbing canes, so prune only dead stems, faded flowers, and weak growth for the first two to three years.  Prune during the dormant season (usually November – Februrary) in mild-winter areas, and early spring (April) in cold winter areas.Jewelry

Columbines are a wonderful, easy to grow, addition to the garden.  Not only do the lovely flowers add interest, but they are also a favorite of hummingbirds.  Columbines can be grown in a variety of soil types as long as it is well-drained and not too dry.  While they prefer full sun in many areas, they don’t like it very hot, particularly in summer.  In hotter areas, such as the South, they should be planted in partial shade and mulched to help insulate the plants and keep the soil moist.

Columbines start easily from seed and multiply quickly once established.  Blooms will not appear on seed grown plants until the second year.  Columbine seeds can be sown directly in the garden from early spring to mid-summer.  Pre-established plants can be put in the ground at the same time.  Spacing for both plants and seeds should be between 1-2 feet apart.

To encourage blooming be sure to regularly deadhead.  If self-seeding becomes a problem, both the foliage and seedpods should be cut back in the fall.  However, since Columbine plants usually have a short lifespan of 3-4 years, allowing them to self-sow is recommended.

Lady Slipper Orchid

Growing Lady Slipper Orchids

Lady Slipper Orchids (Paphiopedilum) can sometimes be intimidating, but with proper watering, light, soil, temperature, and fertilizer they are quite easy to grow, and they show they put on is certainly worth it!  Now for the details:

  • WATER: Since Lady Slipper orchids do not have pseudobulbs, they need regular watering.   Watering every 5-7 days is typical, but potting mix and humidity can alter that.  It is important to make sure the plant does not completely dry out between waterings, or stay soggy (which can lead to root rot).  One tip can be to add decomposed leaf litter to the potting mix which helps hold moisture.

  • LIGHT: Medium light is best – 800 to 1,000 foot –candles throughout the year is optimal. Avoid direct sun, except in the early morning. At home, move plants away from the window if in direct sun, or grow them behind a sheer curtain.

  • SOIL: Lady Slipper Orchids are terrestrial and need a medium that drains well but retains some moisture. Finely chopped (1/8 to ¼ inch) is best.  Wet the bark thoroughly before potting.

  • TEMPERATURE: Minimum night temperature is around 50 F, and day temperatures should range between 70-80 F (the typical temperature inside a home). Humidity should be moderate – between 40-50 percent during the day.

  • FERTILIZER: Use a 20-20-20 fertilizer diluted to ¼ strength, applied every 1-2 weeks during active growth.  Apply the diluted fertilizers with new growth first emerges and then regularly until flowering stops.

Fun Fact:  When many Americans think of Lady Slipper orchids they often think of the native Cypripedium (also called “Hardy Lady Slipper”) that grows wild in the U.S., but the Lady Slipper is a type of orchid that grows naturally on six continents!

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hNAqqdbBEG0/Tde3dvkhFkI/AAAAAAAADiA/5R_DGUnju8c/s1600/ladys_slipper.jpg

FUN FACT:  Although most commonly known orchids are epiphytes (meaning they derive their moisture and nutrients from the air, rain and sometimes debris around them), Lady Slipper orchids are sympodial terrestrial orchids, which means they grow in the ground and have multiple growing points.

Turk’s Cap is a drought-resistant member of the Malvaceae family, which also includes hibiscus, cotton and various mallows, among others.  It forms a multi-branching bush that grows several feet high, but can be pruned back to a desired size.  It can grow in full sun to deep shade, with a long bloom season through summer and into fall.  The flowers consist of approximately 2 inch long petals that fold into each other and create a tight bloom that doesn’t “open”.  The bright red flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds and put on a striking summer show.

Turk’s Cap gets it’s informal name from it’s flower that resembles a fez, the type of hat previously worn by some Turkish men (you may have seen them worn in Shriner parades in the U.S). The plant’s variety name ‘drummondii’  is named after Thomas Drummond the Scottish botanist who curated the Belfast Botanic Garden in the early 1800’s.  Drummond arrived in Texas in 1833 (when Texas was still part of Northern Mexico) and over 21 months collected over 2,000 specimens of plants that he sent to Sir William Jackson Hooker, the founder of Kew Botanical Gardens in London.  Drummond’s collection was the first from Texas to be distributed to museums and scientific institutions around the world and there are 28 other Texas plant species named in his honor.

The Torch Lily, also called Red Hot Poker plants, are drought tolerant perennials (hardy through zone 4) that are easy to grow.  These South African natives produce showy flowered spikes form spring through fall and are vibrant in summer heat, just when many other plants are fading.  Plant in full sun in well drained soil.  Feed with a general purpose fertilizer when planted, and once per month thereafter.  Once established they will need little care.  Depending on the variety, they will grow from two to five feet high.  A wonderful bonus – hummingbirds love them!
