Archives For Beautiful Things

Kawachi Fuji Gardens in Kitakyushu, Japan ( 5 hours from Tokyo, if you take the Nozomi high speed train) is where you will find this pastel-colored fairy tale tunnel.

The gardens are home to about 150 Wisteria flowering plants spanning 20 different species (white, blue, purple, violet-blue and pink). This is the reason why the Wisteria tunnel is so colorful and graceful.  The Kawachi Wisteria Garden only opens seasonally in spring and autumn (approximately middle of April to end of May, and mid November to mid December). Its main feature are the beautiful wisteria vines planted over an 110 meter long tunnel, an 80 meter long tunnel, two domes, and a large trellis the size of several tennis courts.

Columbines are a wonderful, easy to grow, addition to the garden.  Not only do the lovely flowers add interest, but they are also a favorite of hummingbirds.  Columbines can be grown in a variety of soil types as long as it is well-drained and not too dry.  While they prefer full sun in many areas, they don’t like it very hot, particularly in summer.  In hotter areas, such as the South, they should be planted in partial shade and mulched to help insulate the plants and keep the soil moist.

Columbines start easily from seed and multiply quickly once established.  Blooms will not appear on seed grown plants until the second year.  Columbine seeds can be sown directly in the garden from early spring to mid-summer.  Pre-established plants can be put in the ground at the same time.  Spacing for both plants and seeds should be between 1-2 feet apart.

To encourage blooming be sure to regularly deadhead.  If self-seeding becomes a problem, both the foliage and seedpods should be cut back in the fall.  However, since Columbine plants usually have a short lifespan of 3-4 years, allowing them to self-sow is recommended.

This is a creative way to add a splash of color to your old or new fence and it’s really pretty easy.  Follow these steps below and you will have a be-jeweled fence.

Step 1 –  Find some marbles and some comparably sized drill bits.

Step 2 –  Get a piece of “test wood” to drill into so you can determine the correct size drill bit for your marbles.  (A snug fit is better for no adhesive, if you choose to use an adhesive, use one that dries clear.  I always have a 2 part – epoxy on hand at my house =).

Step 3 –  Choose your marble pattern and start drilling & inserting marbles!

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children.

Turk’s Cap is a drought-resistant member of the Malvaceae family, which also includes hibiscus, cotton and various mallows, among others.  It forms a multi-branching bush that grows several feet high, but can be pruned back to a desired size.  It can grow in full sun to deep shade, with a long bloom season through summer and into fall.  The flowers consist of approximately 2 inch long petals that fold into each other and create a tight bloom that doesn’t “open”.  The bright red flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds and put on a striking summer show.

Turk’s Cap gets it’s informal name from it’s flower that resembles a fez, the type of hat previously worn by some Turkish men (you may have seen them worn in Shriner parades in the U.S). The plant’s variety name ‘drummondii’  is named after Thomas Drummond the Scottish botanist who curated the Belfast Botanic Garden in the early 1800’s.  Drummond arrived in Texas in 1833 (when Texas was still part of Northern Mexico) and over 21 months collected over 2,000 specimens of plants that he sent to Sir William Jackson Hooker, the founder of Kew Botanical Gardens in London.  Drummond’s collection was the first from Texas to be distributed to museums and scientific institutions around the world and there are 28 other Texas plant species named in his honor.

Eurasian Blue Tit Bird

February 16, 2016

The Eurasian blue tit bird is a resident (non-migratory) bird found through Europe and western Asia.  They usually nest in tree holes, although they adapt well to nest boxes where necessary. Easily identifiable by their yellow and blue plumage, these are common and popular European garden birds due to their perky acrobatic performances when feeding on nuts or suet. They will swing beneath the holder, calling “tee, tee, tee” or a scolding “churr”.

The Eurasian blue tit prefers insects and spiders for its diet. Outside the breeding season, they also eat seeds and other vegetable-based foods. The birds are famed for their skill, as they can cling to the outermost branches and hang upside down when looking for food.
