Cabbage Roses

Cabbage Rose (Rosa × centifolia) is complex hybrid bred from Rosa gallica, Rosa moschata, Rosa canina, and Rosa damascena. It was developed by Dutch rose breeders in the period between 17th and 19th century. They were favorite subjects in Old Dutch Masters paintings.



The cabbage rose is a climbing rose with large flowers that resembles the head of a cabbage and the name centifolia literally means hundred leaved or petaled. The plant is rather prickly with a loose shrub from growing 4 to 5 feet high and is covered in thorns. The flowers are round and globular with numerous overlapping highly scented petals. The flower of the cabbage rose is an old-fashioned favorite and probably the most popular old rose because of its many petals.



The Cabbage rose is particularly cultivated in the perfume capital of the world, the French city of Grasse. The rose oil is extracted from the blooms of cabbage roses and is used to improve synthetic fragrances and flavour tobacco products and soft drinks.

Growing cabbage roses is relatively easy. It is suited for clay soil rich in humus and with moderate sand levels. Select the cultivars of cabbage roses desired for your garden and then select a spot in your garden where it would receive four or more hours of sun each day. Make sure the location is not cramped or poorly ventilated as this would invite insects and disease problems.


Water your cabbage rose in the morning daily as they prefer soil that is moist but not soggy. Watering daily for the first year will help develop deep and healthy roots. Fertilize once a month with a commercial or organic rose fertilizer. Mulch roses in winter with compost to preserve the moisture around the plant and protect it from the cold, A strict regimen of water, food and pruning will ensure your cabbage roses are healthy and happy for many years.
